Want to be Like Yoda? Apply the Discipline of the 1% Rule to Build Habits That Transform

I love movies. They go beyond stories. Often, they’re about transformation. For most movies, the hero is at the center of the story. That’s who we follow. Someone starts out confident, but then becomes stuck, unsure, or overwhelmed and finally ends up somewhere new. Changed. That’s the arc we’re all drawn to. The hero rises. The stakes are real. The pressure is on. And we lean in because we recognize that journey.

But while everyone else is watching Luke Skywalker, I’m watching Yoda, who in my mind epitomizes a great strategic account manager. That idea sits at the heart of my book, Heroes, Villains, and the Thrill of Professional Selling. The customer is the hero, and our role in professional selling is to guide, to coach, to direct.

Yoda doesn’t seek the spotlight. He doesn’t force the action. He arrives at the right moment, sees what others miss, and speaks only when it matters. That’s the kind of presence great sales professionals bring. They are not flashy. They are not reactive. They are grounded, insightful, and strategic. They do not try to take over. They help others lead well. Great strategic account managers create space for others to think. They ask better questions, not just to uncover needs,
but to challenge assumptions. They listen not to respond, but to reveal.

What makes them this way isn’t natural talent. It’s discipline. They’ve built small habits that give them focus. They apply the 1% Rule.

The 1% Rule: The Path to Yoda-Level Impact
The 1% Rule means choosing one high-impact behavior and repeating it every day until it becomes second nature. It’s not a routine or a list. It’s one decision you make to anchor your focus and sharpen your edge.

Pick one behavior that reflects how you want to lead. Make it small enough that you can repeat it without fail. Then do it every day, no matter what. This is not about improving everything. It’s about reinforcing the kind of professional you already believe yourself to be. When that behavior is consistent, it becomes part of your identity. And when your habits reflect your intent, people notice.

The goal isn’t to change who you are. It’s to reinforce who you already are at your best. You’ve seen yourself lead well. You’ve had moments of clarity, presence, and impact. The 1% Rule is how you make those moments your baseline. You don’t need to reinvent yourself. You need to choose one behavior that reflects the standard you want to uphold and do it repeatedly until it becomes a habit.

What the 1% Rule Looks Like in Practice
Here are three examples of how the 1% Rule plays out. Pick one and treat it like a professional standard.

1. Daily Account Reviews
Take five minutes each morning to look at your top accounts. Focus on movement, not maintenance. What changed yesterday? What signal did the customer send that you didn’t act on? Where do you need to re-engage? Don’t just check the CRM. Think through relationships, pressure points, and emerging priorities. Use this habit to keep your mind trained on what matters most, before the noise takes over.

2. Morning Messaging Review
Before you send your first message of the day, rewrite it. Cut anything vague. Make your ask clear. Tie it to the customer’s priorities. Your goal is to make it easier for the recipient to respond with a yes, a no, or a clear next step. This habit forces clarity and saves time. It also improves your thinking, because if you can’t write it clearly, you haven’t thought it through.

3. Weekly Coaching Conversations
Block time every week to coach one person on your team. This is not a pipeline review. It’s a thinking session. Ask them how they’re preparing for a call, how they’re framing value, or how they’re developing a stakeholder. Push for depth. Give real feedback. If you want your team to improve, they need time and space to reflect. This habit builds that space into your week.
